Rascally Keywords

Finding out which keywords one ranks for

I have a client site that is getting decent traffic, but for the 150 or so keywords that we have identified as important, the site does not show up in the top thirty.

Does anyone know of any way to determine for which keywords (I assume exact match) a site ranks for?

All the tools I have come across allow one to search for a site's ranking by keyword, I need to do the opposite. I need to find the rascally keywords that this site is ranking for.

Any thoughts?

A good start would be to check the access logs, and see what keywords people are using to find the site. Then you can go to the search engines, and see where they rank for those keywords. Then you can go back, and optimize the site for those keywords.

download the free demo of "ClickTracks" to run your logfiles through - it's a great analysis tool, and the search report feature you'll find useful because it lays out the keyword phrases people actually used to find your site (ie, phrases that brought you up on top in ranking-which drove the clicks) and uses a shaded chart by engine to show you where you're not performing as well for a given word.

best of all, its not against search engine TOS for excessive automatic queries, since you're using your own logfiles.

Good points. I guess its time to get referers turned on. I will try clicktracks.

But, what I was hoping to find is some "thing" that kicks out a report that says:

Search Engine: Google
Keyword: widget
Placement: #5

without keyword being the variable? So, the answer to the question Where does www.widget.com rank on Google for X, when X is unknown.

you can use overature.com just go to sellers tools and use the sugested keyword search. You enter a general keyword and it suggest other keywords and lets you know how many people search for them in the last month. You do not need an account to use it. Use it to find related keywords that have decent traffic that you can get ranked very high in. The quality of the traffic will be better and there will be less compition for a higher ranking.

I've been using wordtracker, but my problem is I have a site getting about 300-400 visits a day, and due to the client's server config, they havent turned referrer on. So I dont know from where those clicks are coming from (no paid traffic).

Any thoughts?

The only other suggestion I could make is to use a third party tracking software, I have never used them myself, but from what I understand is that you would add code to the pages that sends the data back to the server then you just log on and check the stats on there site,I think it uses cgi to do this, Ask them to turn on the ref logging is the best ideal though.

I am not sure if this will help you, but try this:
[no-6.co.uk...]

You can put in I think 8 keywords and 5 URLs and see how they rank from 2 - 25 pages.

I am on no way affiliated with this site or company. This is a free tool.

If the URL gets snipped sticky mail me and I will send it to you.
