my website placement for specific keywords

How do I know what # my website places in google and other search engines for specific keywords. Until now, I've been inputting the search and scanning but I think there has to be a better way, especially if my site doesn't come up in the first 30.

A good recommendation that someone posted here before was this: set Google to show 100 results per page and then select "Find" from your browser's edit menu and 'find' your url on the page of results.

There's several software-based tools you can use to search for your domain in various engines by keyword phrase. Google hates these tools (violation of their TOS) because they occupy bandwidth with no added value for users. One of the tools is called webpositiongold and has been around for years.

Hmm ... If a page does not come in the first 30 I do not really care exactly where it comes, > 30 = "not there".

Manual checking is the safest way.

Another good approach that I picked up at Webmaster World is to use log files to help you narrow it down.

If I see a referral like the one below in my logs files then I know I am ranked between 31 and 40 for - blue widget - (i.e. start=30 and no num=100 advanced search stuff). Of course you need somebody to visit your site from google for that keyword for this approach to work.

One of the WW gems for me. Set the results to 100 and enter your url into the search box in Google toolbar
and then click on the highlight button. Your webiste will stand out. HTH.

Any one else noticed that the results are slightly different when you set preference to 100? I get more indented listings from the same domain than when it is set to 10.
I do really like the toolbar/highlight method, great tip.

Sites are indented generally if they have more than one relevant listing on the page you're on. If you increase the number of results returned, you increase the likelyhood of a site appearing more than once.

So in general, you'll get a little different placement. If you're a end-user looking for something, it's nice to just be able to scroll down all the listings. If you're trying to determine standard average joe user placement, you should do it the old fashion way. (one page at a time)
