what do you think about having different keywords on every page, or at least sub pages? what about including some of the more popular/broad keywords on the homepage and including some specific ones as well for that specific page?

Hi Steve,

Welcome to WebmasterWorld

Yes, it is very important to have each individual page of your site optimized for the specific phrases that relate to the content. Also, it's important to note that when we talk about keywords, we are talking about the intire content of the page, not just the keyword meta tag.

You can find many past threads on the issue of keyword meta tags by using the site search function. (the link is in the upper lefthand corner).

You can also find a great example of how to approach laying out your content can be found here:

Hi and welcome

The trick is to match the keyword to the content of the page. If your keywords dos not apper in your text, your ranking will suffer. Your pages will only be able to support a small number of keywords if you want to have any kind of ranking for your keywords. Select your pages carefully when you place your keywords

It is more that the content chooses the keywords.......not you choosing the keywords (unless you are willing to rewrite the content to be keyword dense for the particular keyword)

On a related question, if you have a super-competitive keyword that you want to rank well for (long explanation of why is excluded), would it be good to put the same word in the title, META, and text areas of every page on your site? I am thinking a site theme would be better picked up, and that only the homepage with good link popularity would end up ranking high, therefore avoiding spam and driving huge amounts of traffic.

Travoli,

I think that this is a good idea.......re-inforce the weight of the index page, and the site, by making the focus of the site the one keyword.

The alternative is spreading the keywords thinner by using more of them.

Although you can get good results both ways, I think that what you are suggesting is good for a super-competitive keyword.......especially if it is a small site.

How many pages are on the site?

How is your link pop?
