...try to fight with competitive KW or should I just settle for less competitive ones?

You should try to concentrate on less competitive keywords until you get good rankings on them. Then you can target those competitive keywords as well…

find niches it's less time consuming. Unless you have time, skills and want to fight with big ones.

It is my opinion that the less competitive phrases have all of the most competitive words in them already. After time and effort the site should start to rank on broad terms too.

example: custom widget for sale

will eventually rank well on the terms "custom widget," "widget for sale," "widget sale" and maybe even "widget."

Answer: Use the less competitive niche terms and you will be where you want after time and promotion effort!
