Naming jpgs and gifs

Can these count as keywords?

Does the way I name my images matter in relation to keywords. E.g. If my keyword phrase is "Blue Widget" and I names one of my images "bluewidget.gif" would it help with SEO?

I normally do this. I also take it to the next level being the page name.

Take care,

I try and coordinate my keywords in relation to page name, image name, alt tags, title, bold heading and content. I figure the more the better. It might be over kill but it seems to work for me.

I have some doubt about. It works better to add keywords in the "alt" tag.

I think it helps. If, for example, you do an image search on google for seo, the first images to appear are for search engine optimization companies and then people with the last name Seo.
