Just like that.
Brett has said many times how you can get many keyword phrases to target from the logs. Some you would never think of. This is so true, but what are some of your funniest and strangest referral words that you have seen?
Why would anyone type the words above into a search engine? It seems that Google is the engine most likely to give you the most unusual strings of words.
One reason might be that Google takes all the content and looks for the terms. The more content on a page, the more terms you could be found on.... right?
Brett, because of the way Google operates, do you think that finding obscure phrases to target is best done with Google?
Anyone else seen strange words typed in? What were they?
Try running that search on AltaVista. AV goes out of it's way to return exact matches first, with occurences in the title getting top priority. Google on the otherhand doesn't seem to put much priority on an exact match.
By the time I saw what was happening, it was done happening. Through some kind of glitch a Japanese portal was returning their site on a search for yahoo, even though the word is not anywhere in the copy or any inbound links.
I should add that the referral was not surrounded by quotes. ( "" )
I do know Google will search the entire page for all the words, no matter where they are.
tedster, that is funny. Sometimes, having lots of hits will really hurt you. The engines do have their many glitches at times.
How about this one from Excite that shows up on the first page of results and shows the front page?

That is a big...... huh?? :) whats up with that? No mention of that anywhere on the site.
Probably someone searching for a specific peice of software that spits out that exact phrase.
And you are right IHU, google is a bit different is retro designing pages from referral logs. It does give you some good indication of what combinations people are using.
I received quite a few referrals from ODP / Netscape on search phrases no way near the content on the site.
It happend to a site not even finished nor submitted anywhere. It went on for a day or so on searches for real estate related phrases.
I'm stumbled and I've talked to the host trying to figure out if he messed up my logs - he said he didn't.
Now it has calmed down and everything is back to normal.
Strange - guess maybe the ODP DB got screwed up for a short period of time - strangely the refferals was both from ODP and Netscape.
