google placement for kw

OK, perhaps someone can explain this to me and help me w/it. I have never been very successful w/SEO. I am working on this as adwords will break the bank fast!

Quick question - I have a site that is ranked first page for a kw if the kw placed in quotes. "widget maker". If you take the quotes off and search under the same kw, widget maker, my site is not even on the radar screen.

Any ideas? Any suggestions for improving rank for the kw without quotes?

On wich Search Engine are you ranked?

If you're well-ranked only for quoted kw there is effectively a SEO problem:
How many competitors have your quoted kw?
And how your not-quoted kw?
Has your page correct tags?
Is the kw present with the right frequency in the text of the page?
Is the text optimized in order to get the best kw prominence?
