is it more important to have your kws in your keywords meta tag or the description meta tag? and how much weight does the meta keywords tag carry anymore?

I would say that you can put them, but in all honesty they are not as important as they once were. These days, the title tag is a big determining factor. Google ignores meta tags for the most part, while other engines are said to still read them.
There are plenty of other things that will help rank you like the title tag, an H1 tag here or there. Correct navigation and anchor text, things like that KG
