I have a local business and I would like to drive traffic through Search engines and searches that are local or specific.
I have been trying to figure out the best keywords that would help me target the most relevant audience. I have been using adwords.com as I am not required to pay anything till my campaign starts.
What I have discovered is that some of the words cost more once I select the geographical area as compared to the national search. Why is this? Does local search keyword command a premium? If so, why? Is this true for all kind of local searches or is it specific to some words? How can you find out which keywords command premium and which don’t?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My guess would be that conversion rates may be higher on some local searches which could drive the prices higher.

Only true for certain ones, not all.

You can see the cost of the bids at Overture.
