Huge Wordtracker KEI Variations

Hi,
I've been using the word tracker tool (free version) to decide what keywords to optimise for. Now that I've spent hours developing my site and optimising my pages, it appears that the KEI values have all changed significantly (in the space of about 2 months).

In May keyword X had
KEI - 17176
Count - 4307
Competing - 1080

Today it had
KEI - 15
Count - 45
Competing - 135

This variation is huge and it seems strange that the number of competing sites has went down by a factor of 10. I was expecting some KEI variation so tried to choose keywords with a reasonable amount of searches (ie count in the thousands as opposed to single digits).

On looking at Other keywords I have found that this seems to be the norm (for the keywords I chose).

My question is, what sort or numbers in the Count/Competing field would indicate a relativly stable KEI? I think the higher the number of Competing sites the more stable the KEI (I expected a similar trend with the Count field but couldn't spot one).

Thanks,
Iain.

>>the number of competing sites has went down by a factor of 10.<<

Remember all those G algorithm changes? It appears they worked. Many sites unwillingly stopped competing and went into unknown direction.

I take your point that sites may have been dropped. However, The free version of word tracker uses MSN(I don't know if many sites have been dropped from that recently). Also, if sites were droppeed then that would surly add some upwards pressure to the KEI?
