AJAX Tutorials

Does anyone know of any basic tutorials?

I am looking to find some simple AJAX tutorials, that can get me started on trying to develop some interactive user interfaces, but I haven't had any luck finding good simple tutorials, which have detailed explaniations for people who are not JavaScript gurus.

Any help would be appreciated.

That's probably the problem ... AJAX is not really for non-JavaScript users. You should probably pick up some JavaScript skills first before you consider diving into AJAX. Also, do you have the user interface designed and functionality planned out? Otherwise it would be hard for you to apply your newfound knowledge. Design interface first, then apply the functionality. You may even discover that AJAX is overkill.

I don't really have any particular functionality in mind for a particular site, but would rather like to learn how it all works so that when I click on a 'Digg It' button, I know what's going on in the background. Of course, once I know how to use AJAX I would then use it where appropriate.

I'll follow your advice though, and start with some JavaScript.

I've always stayed away from JavaScript and tried to do everything using simple html or PHP; even for rollovers I use CSS.

This drove me nuts looking for the second part of the article until I realized everything needed was in the article. You have to know javascript to get it to run but that is the point of the article I think (hint: look at the embedded links in the article).
If AJAX is an overkill then what would you call Ruby on Rails? It has some maturing to do, from what I've seen the DB model is short sighted at best. Try [rubyonrails.com...]
