I'm looking for a JS (or something as easily implemented) that will allow site visitors to search my entire site through the basic box and search button. I know next to nothing about this, so dumb it down, if you can. Thanks in advance!

This is not possible to accomplish using JavaScript.
Do you have static pages, or are they dynamic? In either case, you should take a trip to the PHP/Perl forum and ask there. There are quite a few simple out-of-the-box solutions available.
This software is obviously not free, but it does give an indicator that there are workarounds. Hint: the ActiveX element.

I use [freefind.com...] it works well. Possibly the mod will decide to remove this URL if so sticky me and I will send you it, or just search for free website search engine and you will find it and similar services.

I have used iSearch for a couple of years and really like it. The author is constantly developing / improving it too. There are free and pro versions... the free has been fine for all my purposes. [isearchthenet.com...]

I use this: [xav.com...] Automated set-up + very customizable.

I had started with FreeFind, and I liked it just fine, but I switched to XAV's script to get rid of the (unobtrusive) FreeFind ads. But I've recently had to switch back to FreeFind, because XAV's script is so resource-intensive that my host had to disable it.
Just FYI....

iSearch free version has no ads. It just has a small unobtrusive text link saying, "Powered by iSearch2" on the bottom of the results page.
You can customise it, by adding your own stylesheet, headers and footers etc.
To use it, you need PHP and mySQL available on the server.
