Set Icons on desktop

Does anyone have a Javascript routine to set up desktop icons for website links, so these can automatically be set up on a user's desktop? I wouldn't want it set up as auto - so onclick would be perfect.

I have never seen it except for on some very aggressive sites a few years ago that put an icon in the startmenu without prompting <Tsk!>

This _SHOULD_ be impossible under standard browser security settings.

Your easiest offering is an "Add to Favourites" link which can be done using JavaScript.

I had suggested that to my associate - and as my associate pointed out this does not ensure the icon is visible ouitside if IE.

Let me expalin whay we need this -

The Code will be used as part of an HTML page in a CDROM we are compiling for new users of the website/intranet and local network applications. It will be used to link the webpages and applications available through the network to a users desktop. We thought if you could apply this users could pick and choose a number of icons to add to the desktop from selection within a webpage.

Did that make sense?

You are going to need to write a program to do this. If it is a windows machine then a small VB app should be pretty straight foward. You just need to create a shortcut and add it to the desktop folder.

Well I had not planned in dabbling the scripting of Programs - but I do have a colleague with a little experience of VB.

I'll (he'll ;) )give it a shot.

You might want to check out the "Visual Studio Installer", available for free at Microsoft: [msdn.microsoft.com...]

This one is for all the registry entries, shortcuts, etc. for your installation.
