Instead of reading a book on AJAX, might I recommend reading the AJAX tutorials for the popular JavaScript libraries out there?

YUI 2: Connection Manager [developer.yahoo.com]
MooTools Docs - Class:Request [mootools.net]

In most cases, using one of these libraries saves an incredible amount of headache -- particularly for AJAX work.
