Trying to create a google earth like layer adding / toggling for a map

Hi,

I am very new here, sorry if my question could seem dumb.

I am trying to create a map of a portion of my town with a series of pngs that I will use as layers (or divs for roads, shops etc) and a map as background. I thought that by using a series of checkboxes I could activate and or overlap the layers on top of the map.. well I've been googling for hours with no result.

any suggestion?

If you're still looking for a solution to this, you might want to check out the open source project OpenLayers [openlayers.org]. It's made just for this sort of custom map tile project.
