I was hoping that I could be pointed in the direction of a facebook style ajax comments/message board script in php that is available for download anywhere?

Hello Matthew,
You may be able to find plug-ins/mods for popular open source forum software to mimic this behavior. I know there's been some work in this regard for phpBB, I'm not sure about other forum software.
