Pop-Over images when clicked on

I'm not sure if this is the correct place to ask this question but I'm after some way to have small icon images and when they get clicked on they open up in some kind of pop over. The rest of the screen usually goes dark and a big version of the image appears in the center of the screen. You then have the choice of closing it down or you can choose previous or next which takes you to the next image.

Kind of like apple does with its trailers: [apple.com...] <-- go there and then click on "small" and it will pop up. Only this example doesn't have next or previous.

I've seen what I'm talking about quite a lot. Primary on photography websites.

I'm not sure if it's a script or software.

Could someone point me in the right direction?

The effect you are seeing is typically called a lightbox script.

We try to avoid link drops at WebmasterWorld, but if you do a search for "lightbox script" in your favorite search engine, you should find quite a few options. :)
