Window fade out/in effect

Hi folks,

Recently I've on more and more sites that neat effect where the main browser window fades right down into the background whilst an alert or message window appears, and then fades nicely back in again once the user has selected an option or link (hope you know what I mean!)

Is this javascript? Would anyone know if there's a free bit of script out there. I've been trying to search for it but I'm not sure if it has a specific name and I can't seem to find it so far.

Any pointers in the right direction would be great

You've likely seen sites using the popular 'thickbox' script (I think based on an older script called 'lightbox' by I may recall that wrong) or something similar.
