js includes

this may be a stupid question ...i know that you can include js files...i have a menu that i made ...it has js and html in it ...i saved it as a js file and i'm trying to include it in to my orignial html file... i'm trying to use

<script language="javascript" type="text/javascript" src="./js/main.js"></script>

in betweent the <td>s how ever nothing shows when i preview ...can someone please point me in the right direction..
