Directory/Search Engine using keyword hit counts

Hi,

I'm working on a project to develop a Directory/Search Engine that uses hitcounts for the page, and hitcounts for a keyword search to list sites by popularity (i.e. the old Top 20 hits concept).

Does anyone know of similar projects or approaches?

I know its ancient history but it may be time to re-gig it.

PS I forgot to mention [ranking.com...] compiles hitcounts for pages using a vast team of computer users - but the data is hard t find and sort.
