GetCookie that was set by PHP

Hello,

I set a cookie using PHP and now i want to retrieve it by Javascript, is it possible?

I tried:
u=getCookie("lang");
alert(u);

But it gives javascript error (Object expected)

if its not possible, then how can i set one with Javascript but not on any event, just on the fly after executing php file or somethin!
