web browser file extentions

save as .html or .htm

hi
just leaning web design in note pad as apposed to dreamweaver, frontpage etc. In one book it says save tags as .html and in other books save tags as .htm,
can someone explain the advantages and disadvatages of both please if any or is it personal prefrance.

There's no real difference. In the old days of MS-DOS, you were limited to a three-letter extension, hence the need for .htm. Every web server in the world now supports both.

The only important thing is consistency - it is best to pick one and use just that (don't mix and match - it potentially confuses users).
