404 Error Page Alternatives

I have only a basic knowledge of html and I wish to create a 404 error page. My site is hosted by Yahoo and they will not allow me to rename a file with a filename that begins with a period. So I cannot rename a file with the file name: ".htaccess"

Therefore, the standard instructions I found on how to do this, which follow, do not work.

Create a text file containing only: "ErrorDocument 404 http://www.example.com/404page.html" and name this file ".htaccess" on the server. Then create a page to appear when a 404 error occurs and name this page: 404page.html"

Is there any other way that I can intercept a 404 error?

I use two different hosting companies. At one of them it was very easy for me to use another Error Page by editing the .htaccess file.

At the other company this simply does not work. Sure I can edit the .htaccess file, but the site still uses the old Error Page. I solved the problem by finding that page and editing it. Is that an option for you?

I found the page you suggested and re-named my error file e404.html as it says.

It still did not work, so I have sent an email to Yahoo Customer Support. I'll let you know what they say.

Thats why I got away from usingt yahoo hosting. They are overpriced, and as you said, they dont work with .htaccess .

Yes, I gather that they are overpriced.
I received a reply from their customer service that they do not provide the service of allowing me to have my own error page.
I'm looking for another hosting service for a friend of mine - perhaps I will look for myself also.
