Using HTML to acces offline sound

How can I link to wma files stored on the hard disk?

I have used HTML to create an offline copy of my site. The reason is that is has 12 hours of 96kbs quality sound and it is much easier for users (and our server) if they access it directly from a CDROM that I send to them. I have been simply hyperlinking to wma files that I install in the Program Files section of the users computer. This has been working fine with IE and Windows. With IE and Macintosh the user gets an error message but the file then plays; messy but it works. The problem is it doesn't work at all with Firefox, Safari, Netscape... you get the message "Windows Media Player cannot play this file.."
I'd happily switch formats, but in the past I used MP3, and that created problems with quicktime on Macintosh... in a nutshell I've spent months trying to crack this one:
How do you play high quality sound stored on the users local computer from within all common browsers? Surely it shouldn't be that difficult? Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks a million.

hi there,

dont know if its any help, but when i put music on a site, for downloads, i simply made a playlist that linked to the mp3, and then whichever app the user used for mp3s would open up and play the file..

ignore this if it is useless, but its near the end of the day, and i have to appear to be typing lol :)

mp3 playlists don't work offline, they need to be fed from a servier. I'm looking for a solution for an offline copy of my site.

more ignorable suggestions..

surely playlists do work offline, my whole mp3 colection, has a playlist for each album..

if the tracks are on the cd, and the browser is looking at the pages on the cd, then surely haveing a folder with the tracks in and pointing the playlists at that should work..? as relative paths?

maybe not..
either that or write a little mp3 playing app, mbe in flash to live on the site CD..?
