NatWests internet banking operation is slowly waking up; they've expanded their list of supported browsers to include Mozilla and Firefox. Still no Opera though. I see their's is an asp site, so maybe that's not such a great surprise.

Nat West in the United Kingdom is just about to launch a new site for users who use other broswers and OSs. Dont know about my other banks.

Service Information

In the near future we will be introducing a new version of Nat West OnLine Banking. In advance of this release and for security and usability reasons we will no longer be providing support for older Netscape and Internet Explorer versions. Therefore from 4th February our list of supported browsers will be:

Internet Explorer 5.0 and above (Windows Only) 'http://example.com/ie'

Netscape 7.1 and 7.2 'http://www.example.com/download'

Mozilla 1.5 and above 'www.example.org'

AOL 6.0 and above (Windows Only) 'www.example.co.uk/download'

Firefox 'www.example.org'

We recommend that you download the latest available version of any of the above browsers in advance of this date by visiting the websites shown.

Apple Macintosh users who currently have OS v 8.0 or OS v 9.0 installed will continue to be supported using IE v 5.1.7 or Mozilla v 1.2.1

I'm surprised. My old bank in Ireland had Internet Banking that supported Opera and it was written in ASP too!

It makes me wonder who their consultant is. It seem to me that to exclude Opera they must be thinking about which browsers they can exclude rather than which browsers they can include. I didn't mean to suggest that there was any technical reason why an asp site couldn't cater to Opera.

Does the Nat West online banking system use a lot of dHTML stuff? I wonder if this could be the reason. I can't see how it could be security related.

I know, but I'm surprised to see so many ASP driven banking systems. .NET I could understand, but good old ASP.... Strange!

I haven't looked too closely at the Natwest code, I don't want to get depressed. It just doesn't make sense to me that they wouldn't make the effort to include Opera; it makes me think they're not being advised properly. It's the same with online shopping on Tesco.com, a big UK company, website in asp, Opera locked out.

You may find this hard to believe, but a certain portion of the website of a VERY LARGE telecommunications company in the WEST only supports Netscape 4.74, the most busted browsing software to grace the web.
