Thunderbird no longer blocking some inages in email

I have been using Thunderbird for awhile for a few different reasons. Mainly due to it's built in spam filters and image blocking features. I get about 200 spam messages a day :(
Well for the last few weeks or so I have noticed something new. Some spam emails have images showing up in the emails even though I have images turned off in TB. Is there a way to stop this?

Have you viewed the source code to see what trickery is involved?
