3px bug not just for height?

I've never seen this but can the 3px bug for IE effect floats next to each other (width) and not just height?

I'm working with a 2 column liquid layout with 2 columns that give the appearance of being the same height regardless with differing colors. The content to the right has a background image that renders fine in Moz and Opera but appears to have 3px of space between it and the other div in IE.

If this is the 3px bug and not a coding mistake that I am currently missing, will a normal hack work?
