Are they part of page optimization?

I'm in the process of adding ALT Tags to the images on my site. Other than describing the image, should I craft the text as part of my page optimization?

Yes Lawman, it's a good idea to use your keywords in your ALT tags.

Our internal Infoseek search engine is configured to score alt tag keywords highly as incentive to build pages that comply with ADA requirements-- so I try to stuff them. I would expect some public SEs would do the same but have never tested it.

Few days ago FAST and AV adopted the ALT tag to index images, but now it seems that they adopt keywords placed close to the image.

For Altavista, yes, it can help your page a lot.
