IE & https stalls

What IE setting would most likely be responsible for the following behavior.

On https pages, when I click on links to Submit or "Next" the browser just sits and does nothing (No sign of activity, and it occurs on more than one site.)

I stopped using IE everyday for a while, run Norton, Zone Alarm, Spyware Blaster, and Spyware S&D. Found nothing suspicious, etc.

For what it's worth, I've had the same problem with IE ever since I upgraded to version 6.02 (quite a few months ago). The same thing happens when using the IE on my other 3 computers, too. Never did find a solution, so I now use either Opera, Firefox, or (believe it or not) Netscape 4.5 when accessing https pages or sites that I know use them.

You're not getting a javascript error in the status bar either? What version of Windows are you using?

Wildman: No JS error: just nothing happening in the browser. This is Windows XP with the latest IE upgrade (before that SP2-thing).

Wickydoohah: Well, I was using IE then probably got the then-latest pre-SP2 update etc. and at about the same time started playing with Firefox. Then I used FF all of the time. I was just checking into IE-land and went to a https page and bingo: nada. Beats me why it's a dead end, but I don't want to monkey with things until I know I won't make things worse.

I'm running IE on Windows 2000 for all my PC's, so if we have the same problem causing https pages not to display, I doubt it has much to do with XP unless there's some common element between XP and W2K (other than IE 6.02). The really odd thing is that I CAN get some sites to display https pages, but other sites like Expedia.com won't show the pages. The IE logo in the upper right corner of the browser window just sits there and spins until I eventually kill the page.

Like you, I also disabled ZoneAlarm and Norton Anti-Virus, and ran SpyBot, but none of these had any effect. I even went so far as to set the IE Internet security zone to "Low" (the lowest setting) and it also made no difference. I have active scripting enabled but receive no error messages in the status bar.

I finally gave up on using IE for https sites as I never found an answer. It's a sad day when I can successfully use an older browser like Netscape 4.5 on those sites but something newer like IE gets stuck in the mud! Thank goodness Firefox has arrived!

wickydoodah: When I said that I stopped using IE every day, it was because I started using FF. Still do. Its does sort of solve the problem, but do you think that in itelself could be part of the quirk?

I had similar problems with IE 6 while using Zone Alarm. Disabling Zone Alarm did not help. I actually had to un-install it to solve the problem.

royalelephant: If you meant that somehow Firefox was causing your problems with IE, no I really doubt it. In my case, IE quit displaying https pages LONG before I installed Firefox.

I suspect ZoneAlarm might have something to do with this problem. I've been running ZA for years but I don't remember when the problems with IE started. And rather than uninstall ZA, I'd much rather switch to a different browser than give up my safety net! Firefox is now what I use for almost everything.

wicky: you've been lots of help... otherwise, i'd be fiddling for hours with my settings... as it is, i'll let the IE-thing rest and maybe sometime in the future ZA or IE will patch it in some fix, etc. Thanks
