Most of their copy talks about security enhancements, pop-up blocking, spam protection for their email client, virus scanning for webmail etc. I assume the browser itself will use a more recent version of Mozilla than 1.4, but they didn't say one way or another.
It will be interesting to see:
One: if it is anything other than Mozilla 1.7 in a different wrapper.
Two: if AOL only pushes it with their "budget" dial-up service or replaces IE and outs a gecko AOL 10 for Windows.
Three: if AOL will continue OS X and Linux versions or give them up totally to Moz.
If you remember when the fuss about the shell: protocol problem in Mozilla and Firefox was happening, patches were released for both of the latter browsers, whereas Netscape still has no mention of the problem on its site, and no link to the patch. The 7.1 version still offered for download remains vulnerable. What's more, with all of the fuss, nobody noticed about Netscape. It just goes to show how far the mighty have fallen...
One thing's for sure - 7.2 won't offer anything new other than the changes to the underlying Mozilla code - Netscape is competely dead other than using the name for a dialup service and a few marketing tie-ins.
If you are still using Netscape, if you want any kind of support, then now is the time to switch over to Mozilla.
[Andrew Weinstein of AOL] confirmed that Netscape 7.2 will be available soon after that date — within the first two weeks of August, both on CD and as a free download from Netscape.com. He declined to give an exact date.By Thursday, the Netscape Store had changed the Aug. 3 shipping date with a note reading that the "7.2 CD will ship soon."
