Problems fixing "View Source" Cant reinstall IE6

Tried Microsofts suggestions to no avail

I am running windows 2000 pro

My IE6 has problems:

I cannot view source.

If I export cookies, it will fix it for about 3 web visits, then view source shuts down and nothing happens when I click View Source.

Brower hijacker problems may be related because I ran several spyware remover programs and found spyware, probably something reinfects everytime I reboot.

So I am trying to reinstall IE6 but I get the message
"a previous installation has pending work requiring a reboot". So I went to microsoft and did everything suggested there, editing the registry etc. but still no view source.

I badly need ideas how to get around the "previous installation hs pending work" message, so that I can reinstall IE6.

A common bug with IE is that when the cache gets full, View Source won't work. The fix is easy in most cases: Delete temporary files and history in your internet options.

No re-install required (and this usually fixes it.)

Did you go on to Microsoft's second recommended page, with more registry edits? e.g.

Locate the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager
Delete any PendingFileRenameOperations values in this key.

You may also need to check for and remove pending file rename operations in the following registry keys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnceEx
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServicesOnce
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

etc. etc.

Thanks Tedster, but I did try to find those and none of them were in my registry.

Here might be a clue.

When I export cookies to reinable view source,
the default folder that is already filled in is in program file/netscape/subfolder

I have an old Netscape 4 on the computer but it is not my default browser and I seldom use it, but it seems that IE6 thinks that netscape is the default browser or something.

I don't know how to fix your problem but you might want to just switch browsers. I just switched to FireFox and besides the security issue the developer tools that plug into FireFox were the main reason. They have a great developer toolbar that gives syntax highlighted source views, outlines all the page elements, validates the code and css etc. Give it a try, I had been using IE for the last 5 years and now I don't miss it a bit.

I had that same thing with IE6. I've never yet had a problem with it before, or any other version of IE and that's all I've ever used. The problem only happened after I installed Mozilla.

If I'm not mistaken Mozilla has some wierd thing about "user profiles" you have to fool with that runs interference with other browsers and may even do something with Notepad because it uses a different program to view source. Installing Mozilla is what seems to have messed up other browsers for me.

I am downloading FireFox now.

It can't mess up IE6 any more than it is already messed up, so what have I got to lose?

Absolutely nothing, plus FF is faster and prettier than IE too :)

So far I really like FireFox and I like the appearance of the html source better. It does seem faster too.

Has anyone had any experience with adding the google toolbar or the alexa toolbar to firefox?

The "Google Toolbar" as such is not available for Firefox. However, there is a Google Bar extension [texturizer.net] which looks and works the same.

You may find, however, that the search box provided with Firefox provides everything you need without taking up as much space; if you click on the drop-down menu in the search box and choose "Add Engines...", you'll be taken to a page that has hundreds of search engine plugins available for download, including Wikipedia, Dictionary, Ebay, Amazon, IMDB and localized versions of Google.

Don't forget to try out some of the other extensions.

asquithea - thanks much for your reply, I love how with foxfire you can add several toolbars all in one box which has a dropdown menue, and without the toolbars piling up one below the other and taking up all your viewing space, the way they do in IE6.

I am getting pretty excited about FoxFire!
