If I have an index.html and a default.asp file in the root- which one will Google display and spider?

Any user agent, including a spider, will see whatever your server is configured to give when the bare domain is requested. That's a choice that you or your server admin makes - and it's not the same in every case.

However, even if default.asp is the configuration, spiders might still request index.html if there are links with that full address -- http://www.example.com/index.html -- somewhere on the web.
