Browser Status bar keeps disappearing in IE

I need your help!

I have been pulling my hair out here, trying to find the setting in ie6 which makes sure that the status bar is always there.

Most of the time I have to go...

view > status bar

But sometimes it's there!

Any ideas anyone?

That's a strange one - unless perhaps you have a habit of surfing from within a new window that gets opened without a status bar. Maybe from your home page or a commonly visited news source or something like that.

Lots of javascripts open new windows without a status bar -- although I personally think it's a disservice to the user, done purely for "aesthetic" reasons. I mean, if a page is not displaying, then the user needs to know what's going on.

I find that annoying too having to hit view/ status bar. It seems that their would be an always on setting.

one of the irritating things about IE is that it remembers the way the last window you had opened was set.

so if you use a site that uses JS to resize a window (and disable the status bar) and then close that window last, you will end up with that as your "preferred state".

I know about the prefered state thing in ie.

The problem is that even though I set the browser how to how I want it, it still removes the status bar.

This is really driving me nuts.

You don't realise that it isn't there until you go to use it.

Another possiblity is if you use the windows explorer to access the internet, it will change your status bar preferences as well.

Yep - this is something that needs to be fixed in Windows Explorer. Close IE, open a Windows Explorer page and set the status bar to visibile, then:

1. Tools > Folder Options
   
2. Select view tab
   
3. Click "Apply to all folders".
   

This should fix it.
