Multiple versions of IE

It's not working on Windows NT

I've followed DrDoc's instructions here: [webmasterworld.com...] for installing IE5.01 and IE5.5, but it just isn't happening for me. I've unpacked the right files, created .local files, everything. I've also placed the directories on the D drive rather than C and renamed iexplore.exe to IE501.exe (with IE501.exe.local) - I've heard this sometimes helps. Trouble is, I'm not using Windows XP, but rather Windows NT4 Workstation in French. When I launch the program, I get the IE5.01 or IE5.5 splashscreen, it crashes when I go to the favorites, and it even shows the correct user agent - but it is still stubbornly displaying the pages as IE6.

So, has anyone got any experience of this working on NT, or on a non-English version of Windows? Do I need the French-language versions of IE5.01 and IE5.5, and if so, do you know where I can get hold of them (evolt only has English)?

Many thanks!

Are you sure that the .local file is only .local, and not .local.txt?

Yes, checked and double-checked. Only .local. The weird thing is, the user agent says 5.01 (or 5.5), but when I go to a page such as the box model hack [tantek.com] example page, it's obvious that the browser is still IE6.

I don't think that IE is embedded in WinNT in the same way as later versions - when I installed the machine it came with IE2 - so I may have to deinstall IE6, or reinstall in English. Do you think it could be a language issue (IE6 being French, the others English)?

I doubt it's a language issue.

Hmm, that's odd that the UA says IE5, but the rendering is IE6...
Try closing IE6 (if it is running) and clearing the cache -- then try again.
