yeah I'm a newbie who has noticed a few sites having a fade or dissolve transition effect between their pages. I like the way it looks and was wondering how to do it. It seems like it's something that might screw with some older browsers and I'd like to know if you think it would really even be a good idea.

thanks in advance for any help.

they are javasript or dhtml transition effects.
they should be 100% compatible with older browsers if the appropriate noscript is in place.

Like many gimmicks on the web, they grow old very fast. I can't stand waiting for a new page to appear while some form of wipe or fade takes place. I got DSL for speed. These types of effects take me back to the dial-up days.

The most common page transition effects are exclusively IE. Here's a Microsoft Reference [microsoft.com] -- look under "Enhanced visual filters and transitions".

And IE also allows the individual to turn off these transition effects as well (so suffer no more, willybfriendly!)

In IE6, look under Tools > Internet Options > Advanced

...and then under the heading "Browsing", uncheck the box "Enable page transitions"

Those pages look like PowerPoint presentations. I feel like in the meeting :)

Nope. Anything that adds unneccessary loading time should be avoided. Also scripts like these can cause problems on older slower machines.
