Greetings:

I am using XP Home OS and IE6. I've been receiving 2 or 3 popups following closeing of IE. The firewall is active and I disabled messages and everything I could find with no results. Does anyone have any suggestions what to do next?

Thanks.

You most probably installed spyware into your system. Try

"AdAware" and "Spybot Search and Destroy" - free programs to remove that kind of junk.

Thanks for the response.

I have turned off messanger and using SpyBot to clean the system. The problem still continues.

It could be a web page you are viewing just before you shut down or even your home page when you start up. If either one of those has popups, that could be it.

Thanks for the response Robert.

These popups happend randomly regardless of the site I am viewing. I am at a total loss of what to do next.

Weeeell....

at the risk of stating the obvious, have you considered using a different browser? I'd tend to suggest something that isn't IE based, so you close the various vulnerabilities and security holes (ActiveX included) at the same time.

Suggested alternatives:
Mozilla Firebird (Excellent rendering, fairly lightweight, lots of extensions)
Opera (Ad-supported, or payment required. Good rendering.)
Mozilla 1.5 or Netscape 7.x (Complete Suite -- best used if you also use the email client part)

In all seriousness, sites that only work with Internet Explorer are now fairly rare, and the alternatives suffer vary little from the malware problem.

Thanks. I've been thinking about changing. The one thing I am not clear on is if I switch will I still be able to use Outlook Express?

I do not care for Netscape and complete unknowledgeable about Firebird.

You will still be able to use Outlook Express, but if you want to do so, you'll probably want just a browser, rather than a suite.

Mozilla Firebird uses the same rendering engine as Mozilla/Netscape, but is just a browser rather than a whole package. Like the suite, it supports tabbed browsing, pop-up blocking, ad-blocking etc, but it has a better user interface.
Find out more about it [mozilla.org]; download it [mozilla.org]; and check out the support forums [forums.mozillazine.org].

I'm using it for about 6 months (I changed over from IE 6), and I've been very impressed. Features that are important to me include themes (skinning), and extensions (adding features such as mouse gestures, if you want them).

If you want to try a new mail client too (bear in mind that Outlook/Express uses Internet Explorer to display HTML email, so it shares some vulnerabilities), I'd suggest giving Mozilla Suite a try -- I gather its mail component is excellent.

Thank you for the suggestions. I've already downloaded Firebird and will be installing it shortly.

Back again...
I downloaded and installed Firebird, however a problem. My html editor will not start Firebird as it did with IE to view a file in runtime. So for now I am back to IE.

New info...
Following is the script I was able to obtain from one of the popups. I would appreciate any suggestions.

<html>
<head>
<title>Ad</title>
</head>
<body>

<script language='JavaScript' type='text/javascript'>
<!--
if (!document.phpAds_used) document.phpAds_used = ',';
document.write ("<" + "script language='JavaScript' type='text/javascript' src='");
document.write ("http://www.example.net/adjs.php?n=a8ec1933");
document.write ("&amp;what=zone:13&amp;source='0003'&amp;target=_blank");
document.write ("&amp;exclude=" + document.phpAds_used);
if (document.referer)
document.write ("&amp;referer=" + escape(document.referer));
document.write ("'><" + "/script>");
//-->
</script><noscript><a href='http://www.example.net/adclick.php?n=a8ec1933' target='_blank'><img src='http://www.example.net/adview.php?what=zone:13&amp;source=0003&amp;n=a8ec1933' border='0' alt=''></a></noscript>

</body>
</html>

Looking at that code, you have been trojaned. Google for "winpup32.exe", which is the culprit here. Here's some good pages to get you started:

[sarc.com...]
[sophos.com...]

Good luck, hope you don't have to reinstall everything (although that's often the only way!)

what does view in runtime mean?
and I am not sure what you mean by your html editor won't start firebird.

If you are talking about viewing the source of a webpage, you just open it in notepad or some text editor.(not word)

luck,
robert

Hi Robert:
I am using a html editor to write a program, then to test what has been written the editor allows the browser to be call so the program can be viewed in the runtime mode. Saves a lot of extra time when the progran does not to be saved then run in the browser.

most html editors have a setting to choose what browser to preview in. have you looked to see if yours does.

Hi Robert:

My editor does have a place to list the browser of your choice, and I did that. I was incorrect to say it didn't open, it did open but would not run the program. Anyhow I am now back to using IE.

I know this isn't really important, I am just really confused.

would not run what program
what editor are you using?

Html is just text, it is not a program. I don't understand what you are doing.

just confused,
robert

Hi Robert:

I use the html editor to create or write a html program, while using the editor I can just click an icon to run the program using the assigned browser.

It is easier to use this method than to save the program and then start the browser to view the results of what has been written.
