Active-x dialog box

How do I get rid of it?

This isn't a webmaster related question, excuse me, but there are a lot of members here with excellent computer skills, so I'm asking anyway.

Although I have Mozilla, Netscape 7, and Opera, I often use IE6. I have the active-x disabled to avoid drive-by downloads, but on many sites I of course get an annoying MS dialog box popping up to inform me that the page won't display correctly. As far as I can tell, they always do anyway, but I have to keep closing the box. I've hunted around on the net for hours looking for ways of killing the thing, but haven't gotten lucky.

Does anyone know how to disable that pop-up? Is there something in the registry somewhere?

Many thanks.

I think the most common thing is a lack of "extra" functionality somewhere on the page, but the display is still at least decent. If the page builder was savvy, it will degrade gracefully.

Does anyone know how to disable that pop-up?

I did some searching for you as well - but no joy here, either.

Hey Tedster, thanks for trying.

I'm still hopeful that somewhere out there is a method for killing it. I might have to eventually bribe a MS programmer to find out how to do it... :-)

I bet you do not have it entirely disabled, do your settings look like this [antichip.org]

No, just active-x disabled... I have Java permissions at high safety and the scripting all enabled. Is it the scripting that also has to be disabled to do it?

Many thanks amznVibe.

Right on!

That got it. Excellent!

Thanks amznVibe... glad to be rid of the thing.

hey amazinVibe - how did you get that screen shot or the security settings?
did you have to paste together several individual screenshots or is there a trick I should know about?

That's not my site. But I am assuming they clipped together a few screenshots.

It's odd, but it eliminated the pop-up on many sites, but not all. It took care of it on my main newspaper site, which is very cool, but I still get it on www.sp*ce.com. I also get pages that simply don't load at all, just white and it says "Done", but after reading the news of recent discoveries of scripting vulnerabilities in IE, I don't mind.
