If the visitor doesn't have the font, how can they get it?

If you use a font on your site, but the visitor doesn't have it, is there a way to have it automatically downloaded to their computer?

The creators of different fonts (also known as font foundries) have different embedding permissions for the fonts they create. So if you do embed a font, I suggest you do some research first about the copyright holder for that font -- make sure you don't get in trouble for a copyright violation.

Some fonts took a long time and lots of money to create. The foundries involved obviously have the right to protect their investment.

When we're talking about text on the web, there's no big need for the very expensive fonts anyway. They were created with great precision for print, and those fine details are lost on screen at 96 ppi.

I use a barcode font in my web based applications and when new people sign on I send them the font to install in their machines.
