Good morning, well it is here!

I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of some research which shows current information on the most commonly used Netscape browser.

Thanks.

Try Browser News at:

Stats on sites I look after back up the figures suggesting Netscape 4 usage is sub-2%. It will get lower as time goes on.

Netscape 6 & 7 usage is unlikely to increase, but browsers sharing the Gecko engine, such as Mozilla, are likely to show a slow increase, so as a whole they should be supported.

People forget to count Galeon, K-Meleon, Camino, Skipstone, K / XParts (and probably a couple others I forgot) when tallying the Gecko users (not the mentioned the apps using the Gecko layout engine for non-browser specific tasks, like, e.g., TopStyle with "Use Netscape Gecko as the internal previewer" turned on in the preview menu). We're definitely not going anywhere for a while. ;)

It will depend a lot on your audience because the NN4 and NS6/7 userbases are so bifurcated. Among technology workers I'd expect NN4 usage to be close to zero, since it is a very old and buggy browser, while NS6+ usage would be relatively high because of its good standards compliance and, er, non-Microsoftiness. And in a rural elementary school I'd expect the opposite; they may depend on Netscape 4 because of a favorite plugin for an educational software package, running it on a MacOS 7 machine that is as old as some of their students.

The Gecko engine is also used by AOL in its Mac OSX and Compuserve7 products.

How are you getting your stats? I ask because I would be very suprised if you didn't get at least one person on Mozilla / Firebird / Opera 7, yet have two major versions of WebTV and even a Notes client!

Generally, the most commonly used Netscape browser is Netscape 7, although some sites will get more Netscape 4 users. Very few sites actually get more Netscape 6 users than Netscape 4 or 7 users.

Here's a quick rundown of the type of sites that get different versions more. Please note that Netscape 7 includes Mozilla, Firebird, K-Meleon, Galeon and the like.

Government sites get more Netscape 4.
Education-related sites get more Netscape 4.
Tech-related sites get more Netscape 7.
Military sites get more Netscape 4.
Sites that would attract people in police stations get more Netscape 4.
Online banking sites get more Netscape 4.
eCommerce sites get more Netscape 4.
Hobbyist sites generally get altogether less Netscape users.
Girly blog sites get hardly any Netscape users at all.
