If you browse to a link that is a PDF, Word, Excel, PPT, etc document, IE has the extra code built in to automatically display those files. With the others, you have to open a separate instance of Word, Excel, etc. or save it to your hard drive first.
That is part of the "slowness" of IE. There is just so much more code to include when the program starts.

I will second Opera as the fastest to render and use on a wintel box.
I wish Safari had as many features and as many keybord shortcuts Opera does.
My favorite browser is still Opera 6.05.

Actually, in every benchmark I have ever seen of IE/Opera/Mozilla, IE loaded the fastest (which makes sense, as it largely a part of the OS), but renders pages the slowest.
Opera loaded second fastest, and Mozilla loaded slowest, but both Opera and Mozilla rendered individual pages gobs faster than IE.
Mozilla was just a smidgeon faster than opera, but not really worth fighting fanboy wars over.
I'll try and find a benchmark, I read it a while ago.

IE had the same behavior on REAL PC's too, before it was discontinued (weeks after Safari's introduction). Since I had no clue about the platform or OS, I just replied to the best of my knowlege.

I hope I didn't offend, was just a bit of friendly rivalry. I did a bit of CG / video work on a G2 a couple years back and I don't question in the least that Macs are good machines (or that they were far ahead of the game before most of the players even knew the game was on). :)

Not here. In side-by-side tests with Opera on pure text mode, it smoked Lynx by 50%.
Opera 3.62 is the fastest browser ever made. It's a good 20% faster than Opera v7.
Safari? Not if my friends powerbook is any indication - Opera was easily faster than it.
Moz is nice - but it's a boat anchor - it's so slow and hard to use.
The real speed of opera is being able to open a whole bookmark branch in one swoop (30+ pages open right now).
Never heard of G2 before. Glad you enjoyed them. Can we have your opinion on the best browser used on your planet and a general idea on where and when to wave at you from earth at -5 gmt? ( ;) )
As for browser speed, I basically agree with SethCall. Each has their fast(er) and slow(er) points and my own perception has been that the overall speed comes out to be about the same (depending on the type of content being viewed and all of that of course).
As for the planet, I'm from the third planet of the Grabthakian nebulae -- planet x8086. But you can't see it because it only can be seen by the true believers; any infidel who dares to look upon it will be slowely leeched to death by legions of Grabthakian gnarwhales while being forced to use an OS with the system buttons on the top-right edge of the window frames... ;ppp

Opera has too many little quirks across too many sites, though it's impressive for it's size.
Firebird gets my vote, especially 0.7 [webmasterworld.com], starts fast, runs fast, and now does things like HTML textarea [mozilla.org] (just like IE)
and has an ever growing number of free but fancy plugins [texturizer.net] as well as a killer JavaScript debugger [hacksrus.com], no other browser can match

- been using Opera a lot today, just to find out why i didn't really use it more, even though i had it installed. Turned out i had version 5, so i've missed a couple of updates.
Speed's okay, but only if you disable pics and such, otherwise it's slow. I think it's too much of a "browser-fan" browser though... too many settings, options and customizations, and it's rather hard to find out where to disable what. The freebie version also occupies far too much screen real estate, even when icons are turned off.
For tabbed browsing i prefer the IE-extension/clone "Crazy Browser". It's got quite a few extras relative to IE; you can disable pictures, activeX'es, applets, scripts, popups as well in an easy menu. And of course it can open all your favorites on separate tabs as well, and even save opened tabs as groups (multi-page bookmarks). These are "real" tabs though, not the opera kind.
