I've found tweaking the number of connections it makes at the same time can make it even faster. Makes a huge difference over broadband.
Another note on "apparent speed". Map the middle button (mouse wheel) to open links in a new page. I never got into gestures, but this makes a huge difference.

For tabbed browsing i prefer the IE-extension/clone "Crazy Browser"
Not bad, but it hasn't updated anything in the past year and a half. Of all the tabbed browsers I've tried, my favorite is MyIE2. It gives you everything you get with Crazy Browser or with the older, free versions of Netcaptor, but with several added features. And there are always new plugins being created for it.
One of my favorite features (also found in Avant Browser, a pretty good alternative) is the ability to reopen a recently closed tab.

Lately I've been designing a browser based internal application for loan originations (I work at a large mortgage company). Since we have probably 1500 pcs all running Windows, IE is resident on all of them. Since I don't have to worry about cross browser compatibility, I can use all of the cool stuff that IE provides that enhance the design and aids in productivity for the user.
It's fun to work in an environment, where you have few restrictions. :)
Which browser is the fastest depends upon what tasks you throw at it. Mozilla renders faster, but given the correct mix of javascript, IE will easily beat it.
But the biggest problem now with IE, is that there will never be a next version for win98/me/2k to upgrade to. Which means IE 6.0b-sp1 will be the last version on many folks' desktops. We'll code for it the same way we still coded for Netscape 4 six years later (someone shoot me if we are still coding for NS4 next year). That is unless MS changes their mind, which *has* happened in the past.
Anyone who hasn't taken a peek at Firebird, I highly recommend you try 0.7 [webmasterworld.com]. The fact that is availble on most any platform, and does many of IE's "tricks" (as well as Opera's) makes it one interesting animal.

Dang, I need to ditch this 3.06Ghz Pentium XP machine and go back to my monochromatic 8086 machine running DOS 1.2 with an 300/75 baud Internet connection.
No wait.....my Apple IIe is still working....let's power that puppy up and kick some a**.
I actually have no idea what the fastest brower is, they are all much faster than me when run on recent hardware so I don't lose much sleep over it.

But still, *every* page shouldn't look wrong. I find I have to make one or two changes in my coding just for opera (even in version 7.x) but its never quite that drastic (especially if you use the good doctype).
