Ive been using mozilla 1.4 for a while now but the one thing that bugs me to no end is how it sucks up so many system resources on win 98. I think the problem is it just doesnt 'release' any resources so after having the browser open for a while(along with other applications) system resources drop to critical levels.

Am I the only one having this problem? Couldnt find anything about it on mozilla's site.

I've found Mozilla to use about twice (very rough) the amount of memory that IE uses.

System resources and memory(ram) are not related. Windows 98 has a fixed amount of system resources(something like 64k) doesnt matter if you have 32mb of ram or 512mb.
