White horizontal lines running through images

On NN6 I have a couple of sites where many, but not all, of the images have evenly spaced white horizontal lines running through the images. Sometimes, not always, mousing over the image makes them go away, but then they will come back. And yet I have another site which shows no sign of the problem at all.

What is causing this and how do I make it stop?

I have included everything that I think belongs with the <img> - src, height, width, alt - and haven't a clue how to figure this out.

Is this just a problem with Netscape 6, or do you mean "Netscape 6 and higher"?

Are the images split between table cells?

Just NN6. Not NN7.

The images stand alone. They are not split in a table.

Refreshing doesn't seem to have any effect.

This has been a real surprise. All three sites that I am testing have a fair number of images. One seems to be unaffected. Two have problems with many, but not all images. Yet all three were built pretty much the same, and all validate to 4.01 strict and CSS.

For the solution, no matter how simple, (preferably with my comprehending the issue) I will make my years subscription to Webmaster World straight away.

I have the same problem.

The image appears fine when the page loads. The lines appear after I use the vertical scroll bar. Sometimes scrolling the image off the window, then bringing it back in fixes it. Other times the lines will not go away.

I had the same problem with NN6+ and MOZ. I beleive the problem presents itself with certain video cards and settings. I fixed my display problems by setting my video to 24 bit color instead of 32 bit color. I don't seem to notice any difference in video quality.

I can't find anywhere on the Netscape site that says development has stopped. Can you please provide a source for your information?

I'm aware of IE being dead (or at least on hiatus untill about 2005): IE6 SP1 Will Be Last Standalone Version [webmasterworld.com], but where do you get your information about Netscape? Thanks.

AOL have chosen to stop further developing Netscape, but that most certainly doesn't make it dead. A lot of people still use it, and Mozilla is probably even more alive than ever before.

Also, Netscape users are not going to suddenly switch to a different browser just because development has stopped. Netscape 7.1 was released just over a month ago, and because the next version of IE won't be availible until Longhorn is released in 2005, Netscape 7.1 will still be a viable browser option for many years to come. Netscape is 2 years ahead of Internet Explorer --- maybe IE will have caught up with Netscape in 2 years time, but I will be very suprised if it will be ahead of it. And as the only way to upgrade IE will be to upgrade Windows, many people will stick with (unfortunately) stick with IE 6.0 for even more years, which will mean that Netscape 7.1 will still be a viable browser for years after 2005.

In 2005, I will be either using some form of Mozilla browser or Konqueror. I don't know which yet, but I am certain it will be one of those two. What is for certain is that the devolpment for those browsers will not be stopped in the next two years, so they will be very advanced browsers in 2005.

Ahhh, I misunderstood, percentages; forgive me. You are correct that Netscape, the company, is dead, in terms of development. I've been hanging around the Mozilla scene for a few years now and I see "Netscape" and I automatically think of the Mozilla Foundation and the Mozilla Suite, on which the Netscape milestones were based. I thought you were saying, in essence, that Mozilla was dead. My mistake. You are correct in saying that Netscape is dead.
