I think people are getting confused over the fate of IE. As far as I can tell, IE is not going away - only the ability to download it and install it as a standalone product for the 8% or so of world-wide desktops that don't have Windows.

IE will become a main part of the OS, but it will still be the IE browser.

Unless I'm the one who is misunderstanding - it seems that you will still be able to use toolbars and other custom things with your IE.

That is my understanding. It will cease to be a standalone product and will be integrated into the OS. I therefore assume upgrades/fixes will take the form of patches to the OS. (Could be kinda scary).

That's exactly what most of them are right now - you've already been patching the OS.

Yeah, good point. No wonder I'm always scared to download patches. :)

What I don't get is that every time we do Windows Updater here at work, something breaks. Programs go missing, Outlook can no longer send attachments, yadda yadda yadda.
I'm abandoning IE in my personal use, and in fact am abandoning Windows. I only wish I could do the same at work-- I'm heartily sick of the BS.

But I'm interested to hear this viewpoint on the fate of IE... everyone else has been confusing me. I don't think Google needs to put out a browser! :)

In 6 years, I've never had any problems resulting form downloading/installing any of the patches.

I did however run into issues when I downloaded/installed a video driver that the WindowsUpdate page said was "recommended." It caused rendering problems, so I used the restore feature in ME and reverted back to my original video driver.

I have two MCP (Microsoft Certified Professional) friends who both discount the recent rumors circulating 'round here that IE is history. Just because someone writes an article on a website, doesn't make it so.
