I'm trying to figure out if there is a way to render HTML of the words Šumma alu (Assyrian origins) with a macron symbol (straight horizontal line) over the "a" in "alu". I know that the character entity for the macron is
¯
. Is there any way to get that to work *with* the a? Thanks for any help.

The Unicode Latin-Extended A set has ā (Latin small a with macron). That displays for me in IE6 and Mozilla, but not in NN4.

I can confirm that also works in Opera 7 and Netscape 7.

(who cares about Netscape 4? :))

Perhaps helpful in this case might be this webpage on accentuated roman characters:
