It captures the cookies fine and I can see the updates in the temporary internet file. I've got plenty of disk space allocated.
I've looked for any options that could be set and took a peak in the registry - I couldn't see anything that made sense to me.
Any help or direction would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jim
I only use IE6 for checking how my sites behave - and even with just that much use I've run into cache problems, image and css non-display problems and more. They seem to appear and disappear with no cause that I have found, and my research has also turned up nothing.
Sometimes (but not always) clearing the cache helps. And sometimes (but not always) a full re-boot of the computer helps. I wish I had the luxury of sticking to Opera or Firebird, but as you can imagine, that would leave too many surprises for my visitors who use IE.
What operating system are you using? I'm still on Win98 SE and I've suspected that Win2K or XP would behave better.
Tedster - I thought you'd concluded that the problem was down to images saved from Photoshop.
I want to know why IE always saves JPGs as ".jpeg", even when the file on the server is ".jpg"! Only my version of Photoshop can't see .jpeg files for some reason, so the files appear to be missing if I try to open them!

I thought so too, but it didn't hold up over time. In fact just today I was browsing in IE6, went to a new page when all the images and css files stopped being displayed. No other software was open (except for my normal background stuff, AV and what not.) And the page that killed it had no images with embedded XML.
But I'm luckier than Jim - a full re-boot almost always restores functioning, at least for a few more sites.
Hester, that .jpeg extension is REALLY weird, since Microsoft is so devoted to the three character extension.
Here are the problems I had with IE 6 SP1 under XP -
Problem 1 - images would only save as BMP files
Problem 2 - red x displayed instead of images on page
Problem 3 - no cacheing of web page images in TIFF
Problem 4 - Some click on images would not display
Problem 5 - Did not access some sites
Problem 6 - downloading of programs were prefaced with EPBOP
Here is what I did to fix my problem with IE 6 SP1 under XP -
In this order -
1. Removed all suggested files from running Ad-aware and Syp-bot
2. Reinstalled XP
3. Updated to latest update of XP
4. Reinstalled IE 6 SP1
5. Renamed Hosts file in C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc to Hoststemp
This solved problems 2, 4, 5 and 6
To solve problems 1 and 3 -
1. I did a search on Temporary Internet Files on C drive
2. I removed all files named Temporary Internet Files
3. I found one that I couldn't delete. It was in a directory C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Local Settings
4. I used IE tools options to change the location of the current TIFF to the one in C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Local Settings
5. I rebooted system
I don't know how many steps were really necessary, but this worked for me.
Thank you to all on this forum for your advice. My system is much cleaner because of your help.
I hope this works for others.

It's not yet a definitive answer to my problem, but it sure is a clue. These were my local files that caused the flaky behavior. Images had no embedded XML.
