Does anybody know if it is possible to preload the background (<body background..) before the images on the page in Netscape 7+ because what happens for me is it loads late, making it look pretty ugly...is this a technical barrier here?

You should be able to preload the background image as long as you put the script in teh head section. That way it will load before the body does.
