I recently downloaded the latest version, and while it's loading on my PC on the screen it says 7.0. But using this code:

navigator.appName + ", Version " + navigator.appVersion;

I get:

Netscape, Version 5.0 (Windows; en-US)

?

Thanks, Peter

Hi peterinwa and welcome to webmasterworld [webmasterworld.com]

If you want to be sure of your browser version open it and click on help (at the top). You should have a link with 'about communicator', or 'about navigator'. It should tell you the exact version you've got whn you click on it.

If you look at the archive on netscape website [wp.netscape.com] you notice that they don't have any explicit version 5. I think that they skip directly to the version 6 to 'beat' IE in the race of 'I have the latest' browser because at the time NN6 was produce IE was at version 5.5.

Version 6 and 7 are graphically completely different from 4 and below and I think they're both based on the same program structure that's why even though they're 6 and 7 they kept the codename 5.

...and, both NN6 and NN7 are based on essentially the same Gecko version. The Mozilla version number can be very misleading, since it doesn't represent the version but the "generation".
