I have used a small moving Flash headline on a home page and want to make sure the user sees something appropriate if Flash is not installed in the users browser.

How is this handled?

You can use this code from Macromedia [macromedia.com] for browsers thyat support either activex or javascript. It will substitute a regular image if they don't have the plugin. There is also the Flash Deployment Kit [macromedia.com].

Is this fairly common code on pages with Flash or do most assume its presence?

Is it a good thing to have, yes. Is it common, no. Most people just expect you to either have Flash or don't know any better. It is just common usability to give a user options. Options is what the web is all about.

Well put, and I should think good advice.

Thanks,

Indeed. It shouldn't be too hard to have something more attractive than a puzzle piece in an empty white space for those of us who don't do proprietary plugins.
