Web browser usage statistics

I'm looking for browser usage statistics that go as far as brand and version (IE6,5,4) for the general population on the web in the United states.

Are there any current surveys? Thanks!

<edit> I just found this link in a search; it looks very good! [thecounter.com...] </edit>

You can purchase statistics StatMarket, Jupiter, or other research houses.

I guess I'll be the first to say it doesn't matter much what the whole web is using, it matters what your target audience is using. That target audience may hunger for the newest and flashiest technology, or on the flip side it may be limited to obscure or obsolescing technology.

Thanks! For this application, we do need to know what the general population is using.

Thanks again.

Here's a good public page for browser stats:

[w3schools.com...]

It's the W3Schools - pretty high volume site, and a slightly more "techie" user base than mainstream.

Tedster has the only thing close to accurate. Most of the bigger ones like the counter don't accuratly count browsers due to the fact most newer browser have to use an ie agent name.

You might also consider the specific implementation of the browsers, such as AOL and IE. Some things are handled quite differently (such as window resizing on pop-ups, .art vs .gif, etc.) which might be annoying to your target audience.

I never noticed that before, dhdweb. I always thought w3schools just measured their own user base. Thanks for setting it straight. mavherick is right, I was confused between the two pages.
